Connect the red line of the multimeter to terminal two and ground it with the black one. A value of up to 5 volts indicates that there is no problem on this end. i Use an ohmmeter to check the sensor. Disconnect the wiring from the sensor while the ignition is off. Attach the ohmmeter to the sensor’s terminals.
I did notice that on Rock Auto it seems like there are three sensors for this vehicle for the cooling system. One is located on the thermostat housing, other is on the radiator and in the rear of the head below the intake manifold. It’s confusing because Rock Auto says they are all coolant temperature sensors. Was this.

JasonH. I agree a modern car shouldn't have a fluctuating temperature gauge. If it does then the thermostat or temperature sensor are faulty. A faulty thermostat will cause the car to take longer to warm up and therefore increase fuel consumption. Running at low temps can clog up the DPF and soot up the EGR etc.
