Absolutely worth playing ! Have played nearly all online RPGs since 30 years (started with meridian 59), and LOTRO is clearly one of the best of all. Cool to solo, cool to group and also content for raid guilds. Quests are great, its not only the usual "bring my 5 pelts , i tailor a ca for it" style :)
You can play free from lvl 1 to 95 so you'll have a bunch of content to check out before you have to decide if you want to invest any money in the game. Bottom line is if you like the whole Lore of the Lord of the Rings (drawn from the original books) than you should enjoy playing around in the game environment.

It's an old fashioned MMO that came out over a decade ago, with all the mechanics and limitations that implies. The main selling points are the gorgeous area design and the attention paid to the lore. I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings a 4th time after playing the games and I was floored at how close the MMO recreates the world.

If you love Tolkien’s world, then yes, it’s absolutely worth playing. They’ve added a ton of great content since then. If you were playing six years ago and did everything, you may have started The Black Book of Mordor but didn’t finish it, which was a great epic questline, and it’s followed by a dwarf questline to retake Mount ODm0Gp.
